About Me
-
I'm a website developer located in Rochester, NY. Currently I am a full-time developer in the Digital Initiatives Unit at the University of Rochester working on a "next generation library website". I also do freelance web development and consulting for some local (and not so local) companies.
Next year I will be marrying my beautiful fiance and we have a dog named Joey, who always keeps us busy by discovering interesting new ways of getting into trouble.
Why sitemech?
Well sitemech is a word I made up that is short for "website mechanic". I registered sitemech.com in March of 2003, and have held on to the domain name since.

My Skills
-
Don't trust experts, they know a lot about a little. I wouldn't say that I'm an expert in anything, but I would say that I have "worn many hats" in projects I have worked on and have extensive knowledge in quite a few areas of development.
Scripter
XHTML (As strict as you want it.)
CSS (Yes, I know some hacks to make it look the same in IE6, but Lynx is out of the question.)
Javascript (AJAX effects using JQuery, Prototype/Scriptaculous, or YUI. I prefer JQuery if you don't mind.)
PHP (4 or 5, procedural or object-oriented.)
ASP (Classic or .NET using either VB or C#.)
ColdFusion (Need a custom tag but can't find one to buy? I'll make one for you.)
Drupal (No it's not a language, but I love to build CMS powered sites using this finely tuned engine.)Programmer
Visual Basic (Developed an inventory application with bar code scanners, multiple users, touch screens, the works.)
C# (Including the XNA game framework.)
Java (Not too much real world experience, but I do have an academic background in it from RIT.)
COBOL (Should I even put this on the list? Yes I know it, but the only projects I like are taking COBOL applications and re-writing them as web-based applications.)DBA
Database Design (Is your database normalized? Too much redundancy? I can optimize it and make sure it's in 3NF.)
Microsoft SQL Server (Complex SQL statements, views, triggers, replication, and DTS packages are all a piece of cake in enterprise manager.)
MySQL (I can get it done command line using SSH, or with phpMyAdmin if it's available.)
XML (Ok so this really isn't a database, but it does does describe data. If you want me to transform XML into something more meaningful than data, I can do that with XSLT.)Merchant
I have developed four eCommerce empowered websites to date using some very different technologies. I have experience with ShopSite, CubeCart, and OSCommerce. (I can also help you set up a secure server for accepting credit card transactions)
Designer
Photoshop / Illustrator / Fireworks / Freehand (I can design a pretty nice website, but if you're looking for a piece of artwork I can bring in the right people.)
CSS (I know I listed it under Scripter, but it's really important to design!)SEO Wizard
Optimizing your website for search engines is imperative to getting traffic to your site. My strategy is a hybrid of paid and unpaid techniques to get great rankings.
Integrator
I have experience linking systems together to streamline a process (ex: order to cash), so if you need your website shopping cart to talk to Quickbooks to talk to UPS WorldShip, then I might be able to help you.
Student
The great thing in the web development field is that every week there are new technologies that promise to make development faster, better, and stronger. Some stick around and others turn to vaporware, but I like to keep myself up-to-date on the latest trends. I would say I'm a quick learner as well, so if a project requires a technology I'm not familiar with, usually I can overcome the learning curve quickly.
Scientist
Ok, I'm not really a scientist. But I do like to experiment with interesting new technologies and API frameworks. Some I've had my eye on are Flex, Facebook, RETS/IDX for real estate, and the Flickr API.
